According to THE SAGE GROUP LLC, Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Afflicts 41 to 54 Million Indian Citizens
BEAUFORT, SC January 22, 2018 (BUSINESS WIRE)—A new analysis published by THE SAGE GROUP concludes that 4.2 to 6.2 million Indians suffer from the most severe form of PAD, critical limb ischemia (CLI).
“Although it is commonly believed that PAD is a ‘Western’ disease with a lower prevalence in Asian Indians, our research indicates that this is not the case,” stated Mary L. Yost, President of THE SAGE GROUP. “PAD appears to afflict Indian diabetics at similar to higher rates as those found in European and U.S. populations in the same age groups,” she continued.
“Diabetes has some unique characteristics in Indians, which appear to increase their susceptibility to PAD. These include a genetic predisposition to diabetes, the ‘Asian Indian Phenotype’ and a high prevalence of young onset diabetes occurring before age 40, as well as underdiagnosis and inadequate treatment of diabetes,” Yost explained.
Commenting on PAD risk factors in India, Yost observed, “PAD prevalence increases with age, duration of diabetes, hypertension, abnormal HbA1c levels, smoking and dyslipidemia. However, in contrast to most U.S. and European studies, PAD is significantly more frequent in females.”
“PAD may be more prevalent in rural than in urban diabetics. Since 70% of Indians still live in rural locations and healthcare is inaccessible and unaffordable for the majority, this indicates a significant problem. We believe that in India PAD is a major, underestimated chronic disease,” she concluded.
About the Report: India Peripheral Artery Disease and Critical Limb Ischemia
The report contains a comprehensive analysis of the current prevalence and incidence of PAD and CLI in India. Epidemiology of diabetes and the impact of this risk factor on PAD is detailed. PAD and CLI prevalence and incidence are estimated for 2015-2035 employing the Diabetes Method. The number of patients with intermittent claudication (IC) is also included in the analysis of symptomatic disease. The estimated market or number of PAD patients diagnosed and treated is forecast for 2015-2035.
