According to THE SAGE GROUP, The Majority of Endovascular Revascularizations Performed for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) are Outpatient
BEAUFORT, SC, October 14, 2024 (BUSINESS WIRE)—Recent research published by THE SAGE GROUP examined the number of PAD patients undergoing endovascular procedures by site of service; hospital inpatient, hospital outpatient (HOPD) and office-based labs (OBLs) or ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs).
“Over the last 20 years, endovascular revascularizations have moved from inpatient to outpatient. This reflects the fact that endovascular revascularization has become the standard treatment for symptomatic PAD combined with reimbursement changes favoring outpatient procedures,” observed Mary L. Yost, President of THE SAGE GROUP.
“In addition to the shift to outpatient, there have been significant changes within the outpatient category,” Yost elaborated. “Recently, OBLs have increased their share of outpatient endovascular procedures versus the HOPD.”
“We believe that OBLs currently account for the majority of PAD procedures performed in the OBL/ASC category,” Yost continued. “While there is considerable interest in opening new ASCs for PAD treatment, or converting to one, ASCs still account for a small percentage of PAD revascularizations. This reflects numerous factors including the fact that cardiology ASCs are uncommon. Furthermore, no cardiology services are included in the top 20 most frequently provided ASC services.”
Regarding differences in site of service by disease severity, Ms. Yost explained, “The percentage of procedures performed by site varies by disease severity. A relatively high percentage of critical limb ischemia (CLI) patients continue to be treated inpatient. This reflects more severe disease combined with the presence of multiple, serious comorbidities. In contrast, relatively few intermittent claudication (IC) patients undergo inpatient revascularization. The majority of IC endovascular procedures are performed outpatient.”
