THE SAGE GROUP Releases New Estimates for the United States Prevalence and Incidence of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI)

BEAUFORT SC, October 25, 2016 (BUSINESS WIRE)—According to THE SAGE GROUP, in 2015 almost 20 million U.S. citizens suffered from PAD. Reflecting the aging population this number is projected to increase to 25 million by 2030.

Critical limb ischemia (CLI), the most severe and deadly form of the disease, currently afflicts 2 to 3.4 million of those with PAD. By 2030 the U.S. prevalence of CLI is forecast to exceed 4 million.

Commenting on the difference between THE SAGE GROUP’S PAD estimates and the commonly quoted numbers of 8-12 million, Mary L. Yost, President stated, “Our PAD numbers have always been considerably higher and these revised estimates increase the gap even more. We are often asked why?” she said.

Ms. Yost explained, “Our estimates are dynamic, increasing with the aging population and the growing prevalence of diabetes. Based on the “Diabetes Method” our 1995 PAD estimate was 11 million, which agrees with the 8-12 million range. However, since then the population has aged and become considerably more diabetic, especially in two key age groups; 45-64 and 65 and older.”

Age and diabetes are two significant risk factors for PAD and CLI. The U.S. is experiencing an epidemic of diabetes with the fastest increases occurring in senior citizens. According to the 2011-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 33% of the elderly have diabetes.

“In contrast, our original PAD and CLI estimates were based on a much lower prevalence of diabetes in the elderly. Our new PAD and CLI estimates reflect the higher prevalence of diabetes. Nothing else has changed,” Yost observed.
